Is it worth having your own underground shelter? Discover the pros and cons of this solution!
In light of the war in Ukraine and its potential spread to neighbouring countries, many people, especially in Poland, have started to consider building their own underground shelter. However, it is worth considering the advantages and disadvantages of this solution. In today’s article, we will present the most important ones so you can get acquainted with the major benefits and drawbacks of owning an underground shelter. Read on to learn more!
Pros
Sense of security for you and your family
The first and most important advantage of building a private underground shelter is, of course, the complete sense of security for you and your family. After all, should the need arise for protection in the event of hostilities, you can in principle transport your loved ones to safety on your home plot in a matter of seconds. Those without such a shelter will be directly exposed to danger!
Independence from public shelters
Additionally, people without their own shelter will be forced to use public shelters, which are scarce in Poland. Moreover, most public shelters are in deplorable condition, further reducing the chances of effective protection. The most alarming fact is that shelters across Poland can accommodate only about 1.5 million people, which is approximately 4 percent of the country’s population.
Furthermore, there are many areas, cities, and even entire municipalities where there is simply no shelter available for local residents. In extreme cases, some locations are several dozen kilometres away from the nearest shelter.
Full discretion
It is worth noting that we can independently camouflage a private shelter, ensuring that only we and our closest family members know of its existence. This not only guarantees discretion but also provides a significant advantage over public shelters, the locations of which are widely known. By opting for a private shelter, we ensure that only we are aware of the location of our place of refuge.Ability to customise the shelter to suit individual requirements — add-ons
The advantage of having a private, underground shelter is also the ability to include add-ons, such as a toilet, a bunk bed, or a fridge and gas stove. This provides significant comfort and a sense of security in case of prolonged stays in the shelter. You can find all the add-ons for the shelter at this
Cons
Extra cost and space
Theoretically, one could argue that the downside of installing a private shelter is the additional cost and the space we need to allocate for it. However, when comparing the price of the shelter (especially in the Economy variant) to the invaluable value of ensuring the safety of our entire family, this calculation looks completely different. Similarly with the space required for the shelter — theoretically, the shelter will take up a small area of one’s plot. However, keep in mind that it is an underground shelter, and once it is installed, we can still use the area that will be directly above it.
Summary
Owning a private underground shelter comes with numerous benefits. Primarily, it provides a sense of security for ourselves and our loved ones, while also allowing us to become independent of public shelters, which are often limited in availability and may have subpar conditions. When compared to the costs of installation, investing in a private shelter on our own property appears to be truly worthwhile.
